How to Fix Windows XP Professional Master Boot Record
The master boot record contains information that tells your computer what operating system to boot. A corrupted master boot record will render your Windows XP Professional operating system unbootable. Fix the Windows XP Professional master boot record using the "fixmbr" command in a Windows XP CD's recovery console.

Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's disc drive, then reboot the computer. Click "Start," "Shut Down," then "Restart. Press the physical restart button on your computer's case if your computer cannot boot into Windows.

Boot into the Windows XP CD by pressing any key on your keyboard when "Press any key to boot from CD" is displayed on your screen.

Open the Windows XP Recovery Console by pressing "R" at the "Welcome to Setup" screen.

Select your Windows XP Professional system entry with the up and down arrows keys, then press "Enter."

Authenticate yourself by typing the Windows XP Professional system's Administrator password when prompted, then pressing "Enter."

Fix the master boot record of the primary system drive by typing "fixmbr" at the Recovery Console command prompt, then hitting "Enter." If you have a non-standard hard drive setup, type "map," hit "Enter," then type "fixmbr" followed by a drive name obtained from the "map" command. For example, fix the master boot record of the first hard drive by typing "fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0," then hitting "Enter."

Exit the recovery console by typing "Exit" at the command prompt, then pressing "Enter."
