How to Make Burp Cloths

How to Make Burp Cloths thumbnail
Make burp cloths to catch spit-up messes.

Burp cloths are required gear for most babies to catch those messy spit-up accidents. Instead of settling for plain white diapers to clean up spit up, make fancy and trendy burp cloths instead. Use the same diapers you would ordinarily purchase, except embellish them with colorful fabric and trims. The finished result will be stylish burp cloths you may actually enjoy using when your bundle of joy decides to erupt all over you.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 package prefold diapers (12 diapers)
  • Iron
  • Tape measure
  • 1 yard cotton fabric (in a bright print)

Instructions

    • 1

Prewash the diapers to shrink them prior to sewing with them. Dry the diapers in the dryer and then iron them carefully to remove wrinkles.

    • 2

Measure the dimensions of the diapers and cut out one piece of cotton fabric to match the size of each diaper.

    • 3

Place a diaper onto a flat work surface and set a piece of fabric over the diaper with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Pin the fabric to the diaper.

    • 4

Stitch the fabric to the diaper using a ½-inch seam allowance. Leave a 3-inch gap on one side for turning.

    • 5

Turn the burp cloth right side out through the gap you left open. Pull out each corner to make them pointed.

    • 6

Iron the burp cloth to make it smooth and flat. Turn in the seam allowance along the gap you left open and iron this well.

    • 7

Pin rickrack around the outer perimeter of the burp cloth on the white diaper side, making the rickrack butt up right against the outer edge of the burp cloth.

    • 8

Stitch the rickrack to the burp cloth. As you stitch the rickrack to the burp cloth, you will be stitching the gap closed that you left open for turning.
