How to Format a PC Disk on a Mac

If you want to use Mac files on a PC, you need to make sure you use PC-formatted disks to transfer the files. (Macs read PC disks, but PCs don't read Mac disks.) Even if you have Mac disks, though, you can reformat them as PC disks using your Mac.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Zip Disks
  • Zip Drives
  • Computer Disks
  • Floppy Disks
  • Mac OS 9.0
  • Floppy disks
  1. Step 1

    Insert a floppy disk (with write protection off), Zip disk or other storage disk into its drive.

  2. Step 2

    If a dialog box appears, telling you the disk is unreadable, you can format it by clicking on the appropriate button.

  3. Step 3

    If no dialog box appears, click on the Special menu and select Erase Disk.

  4. Step 4

    Select the format you want from the menu in the dialog box that appears. Your Mac will format the disk and tell you when it's finished.
