When you desperately need to connect to the Internet, it can be terribly frustrating to find yourself in an area without a free Wi-Fi hot spot. Thankfully, you can use your cell phone as a modem and access the Internet through your cellular network from anywhere. This is known as "tethering." Before you try this, check with your cell phone service provider for their specific rules and regulations for tethering your cell phone to your computer. Failing to do so may lead to an unexpectedly large cell phone bill.
Things You'll Need
- Data plan
- Driver software
- USB cord
- Internet connection software
Purchase a data plan from your cell phone provider if you don't already have one. Most cell phone providers offer unlimited data plans for a reasonable fee. Failing to purchase a data plan can result in large bills. If you have a smart phone, you most likely already have a data plan.
Install the cell phone's driver software on your computer. The driver software will allow the computer to recognize your cell phone. Driver software usually comes on a CD that is included with the purchase of a new phone. If you do not have the installation CD, contact your cell phone provider.
Install the cell phone's Internet connection software on your computer. This too should be on the installation disk that came with your phone. If you do not have the disk, contact your cell phone provider.
Attach the USB cord to your phone and the USB port on your computer. This allows your phone to "talk" to your computer.
Left-click on the appropriate button on the cell phone screen to access the Internet. The button may read "Modem," "Go," "Connect" or another term. It is often located under "Settings" or "Media." Once the connection is made, you can surf the Internet using your cell phone as the access point.
