How to Make a Key Rack

Save

If you have ever misplaced your keys, then you understand the need for a key rack. Key racks are available from various manufacturers and typically feature a wood plaque with small hooks spaced across its width. The size of the hooks may vary, but they are most commonly 3/4 to 1 inch, and made of brass or similar metal. Before you go out and buy a key rack, consider making one yourself that can be customized to your needs and will work with the interior of your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Pine or hardwood, 1 by 6 inches, 1 foot long
  • Sandpaper, various grit
  • Drill
  • Drill bit
  • Stain or paint
  • Brush
  • Teacup hooks, 3/4 or 1 inch
  • Wood screws
  • Wall anchors
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Choose a 1-foot length of pine or hardwood for your key rack project. Wooden plaques and cut lengths may be available from hobby and home stores, or you can buy a longer length and have it cut or cut it at home.

  • Sand the face, side and edges of the board with sandpaper. Start with a medium grit and work down to a fine grit. This will remove sharp edges from the board and prepare the surface for paint or stain.

  • Measure and mark the location where you want to install the hooks. Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark points across the board where you will drill pilot holes. Consider placing the hooks in a straight line or randomly, based on your needs and taste.

  • Drill pilot holes with a drill and bit. Use a bit that is smaller in diameter than the screw of the cup hook you will be using. Drill holes that are no deeper than 1/2 inch. Keep in mind that these are only pilot, or starter, holes.

  • Paint or stain the board as desired. Apply paint or stain that matches or complements your interior. Use a brush or foam pad to apply the finish. Allow the coat to dry, and apply a second coat if needed. Let the paint or stain dry thoroughly before continuing with the project.

  • Attach the cup hooks to the board. Turn the threaded screw end into the holes to install and tighten down the cup hooks. Repeat the process for the remaining number of hooks you have.

  • Attach the key rack to a wall with wood screws. Drill two holes, about 4 inches apart, in the center of the board. Insert wood screws through the holes and into the wall to secure the rack. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws securely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Install wall anchors for the wood screws, if necessary, to hold the key rack in place.
