How to Check the Rear Axle Grease for a 2005 Ford Explorer

One of the most overlooked fluids in the 2005 Explorer is the differential (or rear axle) fluid. The '05 Explorer differential calls for 75w140 GL-5 gear oil with a friction additive for limited-slip differentials. This gear oil and the additive are available at your local auto parts store. Checking the gear oil in your Explorer should be done at every oil change to prevent damage to the gears caused by low fluid level. The average home mechanic can check and top off his differential and just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels to prevent vehicle movement. Raise the rear of the Explorer, using the floor jack positioned under the rear differential, until the wheels are off the ground. Slide jack stands under the rear axle tubes and lower the truck onto the jack stands. Remove the jack. Lifting and supporting the weight of the vehicle in this manner will prevent the vehicle from falling on you while you are under it.

Locate the differential fill plug on the passenger side of the differential. It is above the main support rib that is cast into the differential. Remove the plug using a 3/8-inch-drive ratchet and extension.

    • 3

Insert your little finger into the fill hole. The level of the axle grease should be even with the bottom of the fill hole. If it is not even with the fill hole, add axle grease until it is. Reinstall the plug and tighten it securely.

Lower the vehicle to the ground.
