Instructions

    • 1

Have each child or adult bring their own water blaster. As an alternative, provide the toys instead. The best type of water toy would be the Super Soakers or their clones. Super Soakers cost more than squirt guns but produce more water pressure to push a lightweight ball.

    • 2

Allow each participant to use the same type of water toy for the water gun ball race event. Mixing Super Soakers and weaker water guns in the race is unfair. The kids with the Super Soakers will have the advantage.

    • 3

Decide on the length of the race depending on the location of the party. Make the game challenging by having the distance between start to finish long. Fifty feet is one example. Shorten the distance to make it easier for toddlers. Use your best judgment based on the age of the children participating.

    • 4

Find a way to mark the starting and finish lines. Tape, marking caulk and cones are some ideas that will work well.

    • 5

Choose the appropriate ball that matches the capability of the water gun. A Super Soaker can easily push any light inflatable ball such as a beach ball. It can be difficult to push a basketball or a dodge ball on grass with a Super Soaker.

    • 6

Use balloons instead of light balls when using standard squirt guns. The balloon will go farther from the squirt gun's stream than a heavier ball. Using balloons may allow you to play in the grass with the weaker water gun toys.

    • 7

Make the game safe to play. If you do not want children to bump into one another, have one child race at a time. Time the race and see who has the fastest time. You can also have games where two or three kids compete at the same time instead of racing three or more at the same time.

    • 8

Determine the maximum number of kids that should compete at the same time in a race with three or more kids. It can be challenging to make the ball move in a straight line. If many kids are racing, the balls and the kids will run into each other. This can be very interesting to watch, depending on the organizer's sense of humor.

    • 9

Vary the ball race game. Instead of water guns, you can have the children throw water balloons to move the balls. Have plenty of water balloons made. They will break when they hit the ground but it will be fun for the kids.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make up a special prize for the winner of the ball race game.

  • Have rewards for all participants of the events. Children can be sensitive when they do not win a game.

  • Bring extra clothing and towels for any water game. Even though this water game doesn't allow squirting water on each other, children will still do it.
