How to Set Up My Netgear Router to My Belkin USB Adapter

How to Set Up My Netgear Router to My Belkin USB Adapter thumbnail
You need to configure your Netgear router and Belkin USB adapter with the same configurations in order for them to work together.

A Belkin USB adapter allows you to connect to wireless networks without having to install a separate wireless network interface card. To connect to the wireless network, however, you need to configure the USB adapter with the correct SSID--the network name--and security key. You can configure the SSID and security key for your wireless network when you set up your Netgear router. As long as both the router and adapter are properly configured, you will be able to connect to the wireless network.

Instructions

  1. Setting up the Netgear Router

    • 1

Connect an Ethernet cable from the back of your Internet router--cable or DSL modem--to the WAN port on the back of the Netgear router.

    • 2

Connect an Ethernet cable from the computer to one of the four LAN ports on the back of the Netgear router.

    • 3

Open a web browser and type in "192.168.1.1" to access the router's web utility. Enter "admin" as the user name and "password" for the password when prompted, then press OK.

    • 4

Click "Next" if you want to use the Smart Setup Wizard or click on "No" if you want to configure the router yourself. If you run the setup wizard, follow the prompts to set up the router. Make sure your router is using DHCP, and enter the SSID security key when prompted. If you are not using the setup wizard, continue to the next step.

    • 5

Verify that your router is set for DHCP on the first screen you come to. DHCP is the default setting.

    • 6

Click on "Wireless Settings" from the menu to the left, then enter the SSID that you want to use for the wireless network. The SSID can be anything you choose. Set the mode to "b and g."

    • 7

Scroll down and select your wireless security type and key. You can select any type of wireless security, but if you select WEP, then your key must consist of 10 characters using 0-9, a-f, and/or A-F. If you use one of the three WPA types, your password must be between 8-63 characters, but can be anything.

    • 8

Click "Apply" then exit the router utility and disconnect the ethernet cable from the computer and router.

    Configuring the Belkin USB Adapter

    • 9

Insert the installation CD for the Belkin USB adapter into the disc drive of the computer. An installation program will start.

    • 10

Click on "Install." When the installation wizard starts, click "Next." If you receive a Windows warning, click on "Continue Anyway."

    • 11

Let the installer install the driver, then click on "Finish."

    • 12

Plug in the USB adapter, then click on "OK." When the hardware installation is detected, another wizard will open up.

    • 13

Click on "Install the Software Automatically," then click "Next." Allow the wizard to finish installing, then click on "Finish."

    • 14

Open the Belkin Wireless Utility by double-clicking on it from the bottom right corner of the desktop. It looks like a small box with an antennae coming out of it.

    • 15

Click on "AP List" from the top menu, then select your SSID from the list of available networks.

    • 16

Double-click on the SSID, then enter the wireless security information in. Click on "Connect" to connect to your wireless network.
