How to Transfer a Cassette to CD

How to Transfer a Cassette to CD thumbnail
Transfer music on a cassette to a CD disk.

Cassettes have been replaced by CD disks, and now portable audio players, as the standard device for storing music. To keep yourself from re-purchasing your music, you can transfer those cassette tapes to CD. Windows systems come with two programs that will help you accomplish this goal, Sound Recorder and Windows Media Player. Sound Recorder is a program capable of recording any sound entering your computer, and Windows Media Player can burn audio files to CD disks.

Things You'll Need

  • 3.5mm (1/8-inch) male to male stereo audio cable
  • Cassette player with an Audio-out jack
  • Computer with a Audio-In port and sound card

Instructions

  1. Transfer Cassette Music to a Computer

    • 1

Plug the RCA jack cable into the cassette player's "Audio Out" (where you would plug in a set of headphones) port. Then plug the other end of the jack into the computer's "Audio In" jack (where you would plug in a microphone).

    • 2

Launch "Sound Recorder" on your computer. You can access Sound Recorder by selecting the "All Programs," then click on "Accessories" and lastly, select "Entertainment" to have access to the Sound Recorder program.

    • 3

Insert the cassette tape into the tape player.

    • 4

Simultaneously click the "Start Recording" button on the Sound Recorder program and the play button on your cassette player. The program will then record all sound coming into the computer from your cassette player.

    • 5

Hit the "Stop Recording" button on your program to stop. Then press the stop button on your cassette player.

    • 6

Select a location to save the recording to in the corresponding pop-up window. You can also enter in a name for the track in the "Save as" field. The recording will then save as a .wma file. Older versions of Sound Recorder will save the file as a .wav.

Make a CD with Windows Media Player

    • 7

Insert your CD into your CD or DVD-Rom drive.

    • 8

      Launch Windows Media Player.

    • 9

Select the "Burn" tab. Then select the small, drop-down arrow on the Burn tab to access the Burn menu. Select "Audio CD" as the type of CD you want to burn.

    • 10

Drag your track(s) from your computer and drop them into the "Burn List" in the right section of the interface.

    • 11

Select "Start Burn." Music from your cassette will now burn to a CD.
