How to Import Google Maps to CSV

Google Maps is the search engine's online mapping technology website. It offers route planning and street viewing as well as integration with Google Earth. Using Google Maps' My Maps, you can export maps for use with Global Positioning System devices and other external software. Simply highlight landmarks or points of interest and then convert the map for external use.

  • Go to Google Maps online using the link in Resources. Click "My Maps" to the right of "Get Directions."

  • Click "Get Started" to begin using My Maps. You will need to be signed in to your Google Account. (If you don't have one, get one at the Google Accounts registration page, which is also linked in Resources.) You can watch the Google Maps tutorial video before you begin if you wish.

  • Add placemarks for the locations you wish to select and use. Click the blue balloon icon to the right of the hand icon, in the top left corner of the Google Map. Then click anywhere on the map to add a placemark.

  • Right-click "View in Google Earth" and click "Copy Shortcut" (in Internet Explorer) or "Copy Link Location" in Firefox and Safari.

  • Clear the address bar, hold down the "Ctrl" key and press "V." Replace "output=nl" with "output="kml." Press "Enter" or "Return" for a download prompt to open. Choose to save the file to your hard drive. (The dialog depends on browser.) It will be saved at your default download location.

  • Download and install "KMLCSV Converter" using the link in Resources. Click "Download" from right-hand menu.

  • Open the software and click "Browse" next to the Input File. Locate and select your download .kml file from your browser's default download location.

  • Click "KML to CSV" if it isn't already selected.

  • Click "Create" to convert your .KML file to a .CSV.
