How Do I View My Graphics Card?

It's important to know what kind of graphics card is installed on your computer, especially if you want to play 3D computer software or games. You may need to see if your graphics card is compatible with new software or if you have the newest drivers available for your graphics card. If you have a graphics card that is DirectX 6.0 or higher, you can use the DirectX diagnostic tool to view information about your graphics card.

  • Click on the "Start" button to launch the Start menu.

  • Click on "Run" if you have Windows XP. Windows Vista and 7 users can use the text box available in the Start menu.

  • Type "Dxdiag" into the text box and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard. This launches the DirectX diagnostic tool.

  • Click "Yes" to allow your computer to download the WHQL certificates that are required to use the tool.

  • Navigate to the "Display" tab.

  • Review the information on the Display tab. It tells you the name and manufacturer of your graphics card as well as information on what driver version you are using. Use this information to determine if your computer is compatible with 3D software or if your drivers are out of date.
