How to Fix a Windows XP Activation Lockout

Though it is possible to install the Windows XP operating system on your computer without performing the routine activation, your computer will begin to lock you out and automatically shut itself down after a period of 30 days has passed. The only way to fix this Windows XP activation lockout and get your computer functioning properly is to properly validate Windows XP using the security key you received when you purchased the operating system.

  • Turn on your Windows XP computer. Let it load all the way to the desktop.

  • Wait a few seconds. A message will appear on screen that Windows XP has not been activated.

  • Click "Activate Windows Now."

  • Enter your 25-digit activation key code into the boxes on screen. This key code came on a piece of paper packaged in with your Windows XP install discs. If you cannot find this pass code, you can recover it by using the Microsoft Windows XP online customer support contact service.

  • Click "Finish." This will properly activate Windows XP and you will no longer be locked out of your own operating system.
