How to Troubleshoot a Smartboard

Smartboards are an amazing teaching tool but, as with all technology, there are times when things go wrong. Being aware of what to do in these instances can save you time and allow you to continue with your work. Smartboards are an extension of your personal computer, so any technical issue could be with the cable connections, the board itself, the computer or the projector. The most common issues with a Smartboard are that the pen trays are not working, the touchscreen is not recognizing touch in the correct area and the cables are not connected properly.

Pen Trays Are Not Working

  • Check for dirt or debris in the pen tray and clean with a damp cloth.

  • Check to make sure all pens are in the proper area.

  • Cover the area where the pen was with a popsicle stick or other flattened opaque material. This will reduce the amount of infrared light.

Touchscreen Is Not Working

  • Click the keyboard and right mouse button simultaneously on the pen tray.

  • Use a pen from the pen tray to touch the center of the cross hair that appears on the screen.

  • Continue this process until all touch points have been completed. The board should now be oriented properly.

Screen Is Blue or Black

  • Check the connection to the board itself. The main connection is under the speaker, which contains the volume controls.

  • Check the connection to the PC and make sure it's connected securely.

  • Check the connection in the wall plate. If all connections are secure, then the board should work.
