Instructions

    • 1

Look for water stains on walls and ceilings. These are sure signs that you have a leak.

    • 2

Check for water damage in the attic near where shingles have blown off or come loose. Shingles keep the water from damaging the wood underneath. If they have come loose and you don't catch them in time, you are sure to have some water damage on the roof, and possibly in the attic.

    • 3

Look in the attic for water spots on the ceiling as well as on the floor. Keep an eye out for water-damaged containers that you are storing in the attic as a sign of the general area of where a leak might be, as well as mold growing in a certain location. If you don't have adequate light, use a high-powered flashlight to help you see.

    • 4

Wait for rain if you cannot find the leak. Go into the attic and listen for the distinct sound of dripping. Use the flashlight to look for water that might be running down a beam or wall. Trace the water to the source of the hole and mark it with tape so that you won't lose it.
