How to Make Your Own Bathroom Shower Curtain From Any Fabric
Finding a shower curtain to match your bathroom decor might be difficult. If you spot the perfect color or pattern in a fabric store, you can turn that cloth--whether it be upholstery, outdoor or cotton fabric--into a custom shower curtain using some basic sewing knowledge and supplies.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- All-purpose thread
- Straight pins
- Fabric chalk
- 1/2-inch grommet kit
- Shower curtain rings
Instructions

1
Measure the space where you will hang the shower curtain. Write down the measurement for the width of the shower rod and the height from the bottom of the shower rod to the floor.
-
2
Multiply your width measurement by 1.4 and round up to the nearest foot. Add an additional 7 inches to the height to accommodate for hemming.
-
-
3
Iron your fabric to remove any wrinkles. If your fabric needs to be pieced together to be large enough for the shower opening, sew the pieces together with 1/4-inch seams. Press the seams open.
-
4
Fold in both sides of the curtain 1/2 inch. Fold them in 1/2 inch again, press, and pin. Sew each side hem on the sewing machine with a 1/4-inch allowance.
-
5
Fold 1/2 inch over at both the top and bottom of the curtain and press with the iron. Fold the top and bottom over again another 3 inches, press, and pin. Sew the top and bottom hem with a 1/4-inch allowance from the inside edge.
-
6
Measure the top of the curtain for the grommet placement. Grommets should be placed every foot along the top of the curtain, 1/2 inch below the top edge. Mark the grommet placements with fabric chalk.
-
7
Follow the directions in the grommet kit to place the grommets in the fabric. This usually involves hammering a special tool to create a hole in the fabric, and then hammering the grommet in place.
-
8
Place the curtain rings through the grommets and hang the curtain on the shower rod.
