How Do I Clean My Cookies for Free?

The cookies on your computer, not to be confused with the bakery confection, are tiny snippets embedded in your hard drive when you visit websites. The sites place the cookies on your computer to remember your preferences, such as your username or password. From time to time, you may need to clean your cookies. This may be because of privacy issues, or simply to clean up space. There's no need to pay a professional, or purchase software, to delete your cookies. You can do it for free.

Mozilla Firefox

  • Click "Tools" on the menu bar. Select "Clear Recent History."

  • Select "Everything" under the "Time" bar, unless you only want to delete recent cookies. If you want to delete recent cookies, select "Today" or another time frame.

  • Deselect all the boxes except for "Cookies," unless you want to clear you browsing history as well. Click "Clear Now."

Google Chrome

  • Click on the wrench icon in the upper-right corner of the window. Click "Options."

  • Click the tab marked "Under the Hood." Click "Clear Browsing Data." Deselect each item except for "Cookies."

  • Select "Last Day," "Last Week," Last Four Weeks" or "Everything," depending on the time frame you want. Click "Clear Browsing Data."
