Laptop computers provide convenience and portability, but sometimes they lack the convenience of having immediate access to other devices that are always connected such as printers or scanners. The PIXMA series of computer printers, some of which include scanners and copiers, is produced by Canon Inc. If you have a PIXMA printer connected to a different device, you can unhook the other device and connect the PIXMA to your laptop.
Things You'll Need
- Canon PIXMA printer
- Printer driver CD
- USB printer cable
Insert the driver CD that came with your PIXMA printer into your laptop and run the driver-setup file. Printers may not be recognized or function properly until drivers are installed. You may also be able to download drivers for your PIXMA printer from Canon's website (see Resources).
Set your laptop next to the printer.
Disconnect the printer's USB cable from whatever device it is currently connected to and then plug the USB cable into your laptop.
Turn the printer on and wait a minute or two for the printer to configure itself. The printer will now be ready to use on your laptop.

- When you print a file, make sure to select the appropriate printing device in the print menu.
