How to Repair Kohler Shower Valves

Save

If water leaks from the handles of your Kohler shower or the water temperature is inconsistent, then the cartridges within the shower valve need replacing. This is a fairly common problem with older showers, but luckily, it's a fairly simple and straightforward job. Also, any hardware store will probably carry replacement Kohler cartridges.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Allen wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Loosen the screw or Allen nut holding your Kohler handle in place. They will be either on the bottom of the handle or behind the decorative cap on the front of the handle. The handle should slip right off the cartridge that is housed in the brass mixing valve.

  • Remove the retaining clip holding in the cartridge with a pair of pliers.

  • Remove the defective Kohler cartridge with a pair of pliers.

  • Insert the replacement cartridge into the brass mixing valve where the defective one sat.

  • Reinsert the retaining clip and place the handle back on the stem. Tighten the Allen nut or screw, locking the stem in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on what model Kohler faucet you have, there may not be a cartridge.
