How to Use VNC Viewer in Stealth Mode

VNC is a great tool for remotely connecting to your computer while you're away, or to provide technical support to a friend or colleague by taking control of his system. There are some cases, however, where VNC is used to monitor others' computer usage in places like computer labs. In these situations, it is important that the user is unaware of this monitoring.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows PC with VNC Viewer

Instructions

    • 1

On the Server PC, open the "Start" menu and start up the VNC Server application. This should put a small "V" icon into your System Tray.

    • 2

Right-click the "V" icon in your System Tray and select "Configuration."

    • 3

Under the "Server" tab, uncheck the boxes labeled "Hide desktop wallpaper" and "Show icon in notification area."

    • 4

Click "OK" to save your changed settings and close the dialog box.

    • 5

Right-click the "V" icon again, then select "Shutdown VNC Server."

    • 6

Open the "Start Menu" again and restart the VNC Server application. If you did everything correctly, the "V" icon will not show up and, when you connect remotely using the VNC Viewer application, the Server PC's wallpaper will not vanish. You can now monitor the Server PC without anyone knowing that the VNC Server is running.
