Simulate a layer mask effect in Photoshop Elements.

While Adobe's Photoshop Elements is the consumer-level version of Photoshop, it still contains plenty of the bells and whistles the average user needs to edit, retouch and manipulate digital images. A layer mask allows you to "cut" something from a photo and replace with another object, or place an object against a different background. A simulation of this full-version effect can be achieved in Photoshop Elements.

Locate "Window" in the file menu, and scroll down to "Layers" to bring up the Layers Palette. Add a new "Adjustment Layer" under the main image by clicking "Layer" and scrolling down to "New Adjustment Layer." Select any type of layer other than "Fill Layer."

Continue painting with white or black paint color to alter the images until you are satisfied with the mask.
