How to Open a HP Pavilion Computer

You must access the inside of an HP Pavilion desktop computer to service the machine or upgrade hardware components. HP has made the covers on the Pavilions so they are not prone to opening accidentally, meaning there are several steps required to remove them. Some Pavilions feature a small handle on the computer's side panel, giving the user a faster method of opening the computer. Whether your Pavilion has a side panel handle or not, you must unscrew a few screws to remove the computer's cover.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver

Pavilions With a Side Panel Handle

  • Turn off the computer and remove all connected cables and cords.

  • Use a flat head screwdriver to loosen the two screws holding the right side panel to the back of the computer. These screws will not come out of the side panel, so unscrew them only until they are out of the computer's chassis.

  • Stand at the back of the computer and grab the side panel's handle with one hand. Use your other hand to hold the computer in place at either the top or back of the machine.

  • Pull on the side panel's handle firmly until the side panel stops moving. Lift the panel upward and away from the computer, until you completely remove the panel.

Pavilions With no Side Panel Handle

  • Turn off the computer and remove all cables and cords.

  • Remove the three screws connecting the outer cover to the computer's chassis. On some Pavilions, these screws will stay attached to the cover after you unscrew them from the chassis.

  • Pull the cover toward the back of the computer until it stops with a click. Pull the cover up and away from the computer.

  • Remove the four screws holding the metal side panel on the right side of the computer in place. Two of the screws are located in the side panel, while two are located in the back of the computer.

  • Pull the front edge of the right side panel out away from the computer. Once you open the computer side panel at a 30 degree angle, pull the back end of the panel away from the computer, exposing the inside of the machine.
