Snorkeling can become an interesting underwater hobby for adventurers, but purchasing the gear can get confusing and seem daunting to even the most eager of beginner snorkelers. Knowing how to test for good quality snorkeling gear will make the difference in how much you enjoy your first snorkeling experience. To have a good time underwater, your mask, fins, snorkel and other accessories must fit properly.

Choose a reputable snorkel equipment dealer who offers quality over quantity. Do not go with up-and-coming shops who offer cheap prices and have very little in the way testimonials or word of mouth. Choose an equipment dealer located in an area where many people go snorkeling. A dealer in a high traffic area probably offers a better quality of product than a no-name brand with cheap pricing.

Go in person to try on gear. Shopping online will not guarantee an accurate fit for snorkeling supplies--even if you know your size. By visiting the shop in person, you can test the mask for suction. You can also be outfitted for gear by a salesperson who can help you find the right accessories for what you like to do and answer any questions you may have.

Look for a mask with good suction that can stick to your face without you holding it there. The best masks stay put on the face with little to no support. Good suction is important to keep water out of your eyes and nose. A major lack of suction can lead to leaks underwater.

Choose a snorkel with a mouthpiece that is soft enough for your teeth to support and is flexible and not hard on the edges. Hard material on the edges of the mouth can damage your gums or make them sore.

Test the snorkel and mask straps to see if they hold taut to the mask and snorkel. If they fall loose or do not feel snug while you are wearing them, you must not purchase them. A loose-fitting snorkel or mask will be unpleasant to deal with in the water.

Decide whether you need fins. If you plan to spend an extended period of time underwater and want to see more, you might wish to buy them. Fins with open-toe or duck-feet design will work well for this underwater hobby. You'll be able to cover more of the underwater area with fins. Purchase and size your fins with water booties to complete your snorkel gear purchase.
