It can be frustrating when your HP laptop's LCD screen goes bad. Many laptop users will wrongly give away or throw away laptops when the LCD screen goes bad. When you cannot view images on your LCD screen it often means you need to replace the power inverter inside the LCD screen. The power inverter gives power to the backlight which allows you to view images on the screen. Replacing the inverter requires some light disassembly of your LCD screen.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver
Power-down your laptop, and then disconnect the power cable and close the LCD screen. Place the laptop face-down and remove the battery pack from its retaining compartment.
Place the laptop face-up and open the LCD panel as far as it will go. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the rubber screw covers from the front bezel of the LCD panel.
Remove the Phillips-head screws securing the front LCD bezel to the LCD panel. Use a flat-head screwdriver to separate the front bezel from the LCD panel. Set the bezel aside.
Locate the LCD inverter inside the bottom edge of the now exposed LCD panel. Lift the inverter out of the panel and disconnect the connectors from each side of the inverter.
Connect the two inverter cables to each side of the new inverter device. Place the inverter on the inside bottom edge of the LCD screen. Secure the inverter to the LCD screen with two strips of masking tape.
Re-assemble the laptop by repeating steps one through three in reverse.
Tips & Warnings
- Make sure the power cord is disconnected and the battery removed before doing anything inside the computer case. Parts of the system may be powered even when the system is off. You could risk personal injury or damage to circuitry if the power is not disconnected.
- Static electricity can damage electronic parts. Ground yourself by touching a metal part of the computer chassis, or use an antistatic wrist strap, before touching the RAM or any other circuit board.
