Instructions

Purchase a computer router. A router is very small and lightwieght and can be placed almost anywhere in your house. If your desktop is not wireless you'll want to set it up near your desktop computer. Open the router and plug into a power outlet.

Plug a network cable from your desktop's network card in the back of the router. If you have a cable modem or DSL connected there, you can plug that into the Internet port on the back of the router.

    • 3

Open a web browser on the desktop computer and enter the router's IP address listed in the router's manual. Enter the user name and password provided by the manual when the router page opens.

    • 4

Make any changes to the router such as setting up wireless security. You can choose to setup security that requires a password or key. Write down the password or key that is created.

Turn on your laptop and the wireless card will detect the router as long as it is not too far away. In the network settings look for wireless networks and choose your router and click "connect." Enter a password or key if you turned on wireless security.
