How to Troubleshoot Toshiba Laptops

How to Troubleshoot Toshiba Laptops thumbnail
A Phillips head screwdriver is key to troubleshooting your Toshiba laptop.

Toshiba laptops do not vary from other computers in that they can have their fair share of problems that must be diagnosed and troubleshooted for prior to treatment. Having an idea of the issue that affects your laptop is pertinent to making repairs, but it can be difficult to wade through the pool of possible problems. There are however a set of common issues that you can troubleshoot for even if you have no extensive computer knowledge, using just a Phillips head screwdriver.

Consider your monitor brightness settings if your Toshiba's screen is dark. Your brightness settings may have been accidentally turned all the way down. Adjust them by using the brightness keys on the top of your Toshiba keyboard.

    • 2

Consider replacing your battery if the Toshiba's screen is still dark. Average batteries last about 1000 charges before deteriorating. Turn the Toshiba laptop over to access its bottom. The battery can be found at the top of the bottom of the unit, and just below it is the battery release mechanism. Slide this release mechanism to the left to release and replace the battery.

    • 3

Access the monitor's inverter cable if the monitor remains dark even after attempted battery replacement. Take a Phillips head screwdriver and remove the screws around the bezel of the Toshiba's monitor (the outer perimeter of the monitor).

    • 4

Remove the bezel. Pry one corner of the bezel up and peel the bezel off.

    • 5

Locate the inverter cable, which can be seen running into the inverter cable connector at the center of the bottom of the bezel-free screen. Reconnect this cable into the connector if it has come loose. Secure the connector into the "locked" position by snapping it down so that it is horizontal in orientation and not vertical.

    • 6

Check the Toshiba laptop's keyboard cable if the keyboard has ceased to function properly. Turn the laptop over and locate the screws on the bottom that are marked with a keyboard icon. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove these.

    • 7

Turn the Toshiba laptop back over and pry out the now loose keyboard from the bottom housing of the unit. Do not pull the keyboard all the way out. Instead, lift it partially out, just enough to reveal the keyboard cable running from the bottom of the keyboard to the bottom of the Toshiba laptop. It should plug into the keyboard cable connector securely. If it has come loose, reconnect it in the same manner as you would an inverter cable.
