How to Talk on a Cell Phone From the Internet

Using VoIP on your cell phone can save you money.

Using your cell phone's Internet capabilities to make phone calls is a great way to save money on daytime minutes. You can opt for a cheaper cell phone plan and use the Internet as your primary source to make cheaper calls, or you can use your cell phone's Internet connection to make calls late in the month when you have exceeded your allotted number of minutes. You still have to pay your phone bill, and VoIP service is not as reliable typical cell phone service, but the right service can suit your particular calling needs.

Instructions

1. Choose the voice over internet protocol (VoIP) cell phone application you would like to use. As long as the application has VoIP service, it will provide you with the ability to make phone calls over the Internet without incurring any additional cost from your cell phone carrier. Some of the more popular VoIP mobile applications include Truphone, RingFree and Skype.

2. Install the chosen application onto your mobile device. With most phones, this will require accessing the website and downloading the application. With the iPhone, search for your desired application in the iPhone App Store.

3. Register for your application's online service. You can do this either with the application or on your own personal computer. If you choose to register using a computer, you will have to enter your log-in information you want to use the application on your phone. With most VoIP applications, you can make free calls from one user to the next. However, to make phone calls to another cell phone user, you will have to pay a monthly subscription or per-minute fee.

4. Connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network. Depending on your carrier and your location in the world, you may be required to connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network in order to use your application. Some applications have contracts with carriers that would allow you to use your carrier's Internet connection with your VoIP application, but most require that you use an outside Internet connection with your application.

5. Launch your VoIP application on your cell phone. Using your particular application's interface, dial the phone number of your choice and begin making calls over the Internet.
