MP4s and MOVs are supported by the iPod.

The AVI file extension represents the Audio Video Interleave movie file format, created by Microsoft. AVI files employ minimal compression, resulting in large file sizes with stellar video quality. To view AVIs on your video-supported iPod, you'll need to convert to either the MOV or MP4 video formats, which are both playable on the device.

Instructions

  1. Media-Convert

      Load Media-Convert.com in any Web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Safari (se Resources). Click "Choose File" and find the AVI file you want to convert into a MP4 or MOV. Media-Convert restricts upload size to 200MB.

      Select "AVI" as your input movie format in the drop-down menu. Next, pick "MP4" or "MOV" for your output movie container.

      Click "OK" to transfer to the new format. After the conversion finishes, click the download link to receive your video file.

    Media Converter

      Launch MediaConverter.org in any browser (see Resources).

      Select the "Upload a File" button and locate the AVI file you want to convert. Choose "MOV" or "MP4" for your output movie container. Media Converter restricts upload size at 100MB for its free users.

      Click "Start" to create the movie file. After the conversion finishes, click the link to download your new movie.

    Zamzar

      Navigate to Zamzar.com in your favorite Web browser (see Resources).

      Click "Choose File" and find the video file you want to convert. Select the MP4 or MOV container as your output. Zamzar's free users may only upload files less than 100MB in size.

      Type your email address in the "E-mail" menu and click "Convert." You'll soon be sent an email from Zamzar with your movie saved inside a download link.

Tips & Warnings

  • Should you wish to boost the maximum file size for Mediaconverter and Zamzar, you can buy a monthly or yearly membership with either site. Monthly Mediaconverter memberships start at $15 per month, while monthly Zamzar memberships begin at $7 (as of April 2010).
