How to Donate a Car to Charity in Vancouver

If you have a car in Vancouver, British Columbia, that you no longer want or need, you can donate it to a local charity. In Canada, there are centers that accept car donations on behalf of charities, such as the Canadian Diabetes Association. Once the donation center sells the car at auction or for parts, it forwards the money to the charity you have chosen. As in the United States, donating a car to charity has tax benefits, and you will get a receipt for this purpose.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Vancouver area charity--if you have a specific one in mind--and ask them how they would prefer for you to donate the car and get it to them. Some charities take the car directly, others prefer for you to use a donation center, such as Car Charity Program Vancouver or CharityCar.ca, to handle the donation.

    • 2

Call the Vancouver donation center that the charity specifies--or pick a donation center if you do not have a specific charity in mind--and arrange for a pickup. Give the charity or donation center details about your car--the make, model, year and condition--to make sure they want to take it. They will tell you the estimated value of the vehicle over the phone. The donation center will ask you which charity you want to benefit, from among those that they service.

    • 3

Arrange with the charity for the vehicle to be assessed by a Vancouver area appraiser if you feel that the value is higher than the quote you received over the phone. If the charity or donation center is planning on dismantling the car and selling it for salvage parts you will only get tax credit for a $50 donation. If the car is going to be sold at auction, your receipt will reflect the auction sales price.

    • 4

Give your registration to the tow truck driver, if the car is being towed, or the charity, if you are dropping off the car. You also have to sign a transfer form to transfer vehicle ownership to the charity or donation center. If using a donation center, be sure to designate the charity where you want the car to be donated.

Wait four to six weeks to get your tax receipt by mail. It will come directly from the charity you selected, even if you used a donation center.
