1. Purchase the best quality camera your budget will allow. Learn to use it on all the settings. Anybody can point and shoot. As a professional you want to have control.

2. Hone your skills. Photography involves technique, but there is also an element of art. Learn to infuse your photos with creativity.

3. Keep a current portfolio of your best work. Have your camera with you as often as possible. Sometimes photography is as much about luck, and you should be prepared to capture the shot.

4. Take a business course if you are thinking of opening your own studio. You'll need to know about advertising, how to handle employees and you'll be responsible for accounts payable and receivable.

5. Freelance for as many entities as you are able. The more published work you have the more work you'll be able to get.
