How to Repair a Blue Vinyl Coleman Camper

Don't let a hole in the roof keep you from enjoying your Coleman camper.

The folks at the Coleman company had a stroke of genius when they developed their pop-up campers. Instead of being large, difficult to maneuver, and inconvenient to store, Coleman campers are easy to manage. Starting as a nice little box, Coleman campers are expanded into full campers by simply opening a canvas shell. However the soft material in a Coleman camper can develop holes or rips, which can let in bugs and rain. You can easily repair these with a vinyl patch.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a vinyl patch kit. The kit will include sheets of vinyl and special waterproof vinyl adhesive. Kits can be obtained from camping as well as swimming pool and boating suppliers. Try to find a kit that has patches that match the vinyl on your roof. If you cannot find an exact match, keep in mind the patches will be on the roof and not visible. If matching is important to you, you can buy vinyl on your own from a fabric supplier. In this case the adhesive can be purchased separately.

    • 2

Clean the area to be patched. Open the camper and wash the area with dish soap and water, then wipe it down with rubbing alcohol (some kits include alcohol wipes). Cleaning is important, as dirt and other build-up will interfere with adhesion. Let the area dry before adhering the patch.

    • 3

Cut a patch 2 to 2-1/2 inches larger in diameter than the hole. The patch can be cut round or square, but square patches should have rounded corner, as sharp corners are more prone to getting snagged and peeled up.

    • 4

Apply a thin, consistent coat of vinyl adhesive to the back of the patch using the applicator that came in the kit. Do not apply the adhesive too thick, as this can result in wrinkling and peeling.

    • 5

Place the patch over the hole. Press down all over the patch to smooth it down. Allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours before folding the camper.
