How to Change the Fuel Filter in a Nissan

Save money at the pump by changing your fuel filter.

Fuel-filter location varies among Nissan models. You probably didn't plan on becoming this well acquainted with your Nissan, but when it starts coughing and lacks acceleration, you decide to change the fuel filter. First, you must find it. On some models, the fuel filter is located near the carburetor, but on other models it's located in the fuel line near the rear of the car while on others, the filter is inside the fuel pump, so the fuel pump must be replaced.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver, small wrench, or pliers to remove clamps on fuel filter
• Mechanic's gloves
• Drain pan to catch fuel

Instructions

Fuel Filter Near Carburetor, Under the Hood

1. Trace the fuel line, the rubber hose that runs to the carburetor, back to the fuel filter, which is either a plastic or metal container that houses the paper filter. Remove the filter from any retaining bracket that may connect it to the firewall of the engine or other engine component. Place a drain pan beneath the filter to catch gas from the fuel line.

2. Hold the filter with one hand, and use the other to remove the clamp and rubber hose from the carburetor side of the filter. Switch hands and remove the clamp and rubber hose on the opposite side of the filter. Dispose of the old filter properly.

3. Install the new filter by placing the hose from the carburetor on the "out" pipe of the fuel filter. Hold the filter with one hand and install the clamp and hose with the other. Switch hands and install the other hose and clamp. Place the new filter in the retaining bracket if applicable.

Fuel Filter in Fuel Line Under the Vehicle

1. Find the fuel filter under the car by following the fuel line from the gas tank.

2. Remove the fuel filter and install it just as if it were under the hood, but understand that the fuel line is metallic tubing rather than a rubber hose.

3. Use a wrench to remove the fuel filter, and install the new filter in the same manner for an under-hood filter.

Tips & Warnings

• For fuel filters in the fuel pump, replace the entire pump because the filter cannot be removed from the pump.

• It's best to change the filter regularly to maximize gas mileage.

• An old filter may waste away and small bits of the paper filter may enter the carburetor, which causes significant problems. That's another reason it's critical to change the filter.

• Always dispose of the old fuel filter properly to protect the environment.
