1. Verify that your Verizon Wireless plan includes texting. If it doesn't you may not be able to receive messages. Customer service can be reached at 800-922-0204 from 6am to 11pm seven days a week. A Verizon store can also make alterations to your plan (see Resources).

2. Give your friends and family your number to text once you have verified that you have a plan that includes text messaging. When someone sends a text message to your number, you should receive it within minutes as long as your phone is in service.

3. Visit txt.vzw.com (see References) and log into your account to send a text message from your Verizon number to another phone. You can also check the status of your text and change your messaging preferences.

Tips & Warnings

• Paying your bill online or over the phone will prompt Verizon to text message you your current payment status.
