How to Install Speakers in the Interior Door Panels of a 2000 Durango
Installing new speakers in the 2000 Dodge Durango is one of the easiest upgrades you can perform, and with quality speakers, the effect is immediately apparent. The entire process will take about 30 minutes, depending on your previous installation experience and how well the mounting holes in the speaker line up with those in the door frame.
Instructions
-
Front Door Panels
-
1
Open the door and roll down the window to ensure it doesn't get damaged while removing the panel.
-
2
Remove two screws from the bottom left and bottom right corners of the door panel.
-
-
3
Remove the third screw, located near the top of the panel, behind the door handle.
-
4
Remove a fourth screw, located just behind the grab bar towards the middle of the frame.
-
5
Remove the final screw, located above the mirror adjustment controls.
-
6
Lift the door panel straight up, but do not attempt to pull it out just yet. You'll hear a click as it disengages. Pull it towards you just enough that you'll have enough room to reach inside.
-
7
Disconnect the linkage from the door handle. The linkage rod has a plastic clip, just unsnap it and it'll move out of the way.
-
8
Unplug the connectors for the power windows, door locks and power mirror, if applicable, by pressing down.
-
9
Disconnect the clips holding the panel in place, by the power window/power lock panel.
-
10
Pull off the panel.
Rear Door Panels
-
11
Remove the two screws from the bottom of the door panel. These are located in the same place as the front doors.
-
12
Remove the screws behind the door handle and grab bar.
-
13
Remove the upper trim extension. This is the strip that runs along the top edge of the door frame. This should just pop out, as it's clipped in place. If not, use a thin plastic object to pry it out.
-
14
Remove the final screw from behind the trim extension.
-
15
As with the front door, lift the panel straight up and out.
-
16
Remove the electrical connectors and linkages. These are the same connectors as the front door panel.
-
17
Pull off the panel.
Speaker Removal and Installation
-
18
Disconnect the negative cable of your battery and set it aside where it cannot come into contact with the positive cable. The positive and negative terminal on your battery will be labeled with a plus sign or minus sign, respectively.
-
19
Pull the speaker out enough to access the wire harness connector, and disconnect it from the door connector.
-
20
Pull out the old speaker.
-
21
Clip the wires of your speaker into the speaker harness. Tug gently on either side to ensure the wires are locked in place.
-
22
Snap the wire harness into the connector.
-
23
Line up the mounting holes with the holes in the door frame and screw the new speaker into place.
Final Steps
-
24
Re-attach the negative cable to the battery terminal.
-
25
Start up your stereo to verify your speaker connections. Adjust the speaker balance to ensure each speaker is working and sounds the way it should.
-
26
Turn off the vehicle and reattach the door panels by following the above steps in the opposite order.

Tips & Warnings
These instructions are specific to the year 2000 model Dodge Durango. Other makes, models and model years may vary.
This article assumes your vehicle is equipped with automatic windows. If your vehicle has manual windows, you'll need to remove the window crank before removing the panel, which requires the use of a window crank removal tool.
Don't use a metal object like a screwdriver or butter knife to pry the trim extension as you may damage the vehicle's paint.
