How to Convert .Bat File Extensions

A batch file is a text file with a series of commands to be executed from the command line in DOS, Windows and OS/2. Batch files are shell scripts and may be basic, with one or two lines of code, or may be complex, executing a series of instructions. Because batch files are simple text files, they may be created and edited using a text editor such as Notepad. The .bat file extension may also be converted using the "Rename" function in Windows Explorer.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on the Windows "Start" button and select "Explore" from the context menu.

    • 2

Navigate to the .bat file with the extension to be converted.

    • 3

Right-click on the .bat file and select "Rename" from the context menu.

    • 4

Highlight the .bat file extension and type a new extension in its place. If the file extension is not visible due to folder settings, type the entire file name with the new extension in quotation marks (i.e., "text.txt"). This action will rename the file with the literal name in quotations and the file extension will be converted as well.

    • 5

Click the "OK" button. The file with the .bat file extension has now been converted and renamed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because .bat files are simple text files, converting the file extension to .txt would enable the file to be quickly opened in Notepad for editing, because .txt is the native file type for the Notepad text editor.
