How to Find Sixties Style Denim Vests & Floppy Hats

Denim vests and floppy hats enjoyed popularity during the mid- to late 1960s. The vests were worn by both men and women and often sported fringes and other decorations. The vests were often donned as part of the “hippie” wardrobe adopted by non-conformists of the era.
Although floppy hats may have been worn by some in the “hippie” movement, the hats also became stylish headwear for ladies who dressed in “mod” clothing. Floppy hats were made of varied fabrics and often matched the dress with which they were pictured.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit better consignment clothing shops. Upscale consignment clothing retailers often accept vintage merchandise in good or excellent condition. Visit your local shop(s) often, and ask to be notified if denim vests or floppy hats are accepted for sale.

    • 2

Browse a vintage clothing shop directory. The DMOZ Open Directory Project provides a nationwide directory of online and brick-and-mortar vintage clothing shops. The master list features a brief description of the shop’s inventory (e.g. 1960s, Victorian or 1970s disco era). Click through to each shop’s website to search for specific items.

    • 3

Locate online sixties clothing retailers. Search online inventories of retailers that specialize in 1960s vintage clothing. Some companies stock both men’s and women’s clothing, while others focus solely on women’s apparel. In some cases, a search function will enable you to view specific items. Check the sites often as new clothing may be periodically added.

    • 4

Find ladies’ vintage hat retailers. Utilize a nationwide directory of retailers that stock vintage hats. While there’s no guarantee that a 1960s floppy hat will be available, this targeted search will help you connect with the world of vintage millinery.

    • 5

Find ladies’ vintage vest retailers. Search a nationwide directory of retailers that carry ladies’ vintage vests. If you can’t locate ladies’ vintage denim vests, it may also be useful to expand your search to men’s vintage denim vests.

    • 6

Find modern denim vests and floppy hats. Visit online retailers for currently made versions of denim vests and floppy hats. Some vest or hat fabric may be distressed to simulate the look of 1960s apparel.
