How to Store Precious Metals

Precious metals such as bars of gold, silver, platinum or any type of coin worth a substantial amount of money need to be stored securely to guard against theft. Choosing just one location for the storage of all your metals isn't ideal. In the event of a robbery, multiple hiding places will ensure that you'll retain some of your assets.

Things You'll Need

• Safe-deposit box
• Fireproof safe
• Waterproof container
• Shovel

Instructions

1. Purchase a safe-deposit box from a bank. Store some of your precious metals in it under the name of a limited liability company that you formed. This is an important precaution to take if you want to keep your name off your valuables.

2. Place another portion of your precious metals in a fireproof safe you keep at home. Keep it hidden, but make sure you can still access it easily if necessary.

3. Place the last portion of your metals in a waterproof container to store outside. Dig a hole on your property at least 3 feet deep. Bury the container in the hole and cover with dirt.

Tips & Warnings

• Never bury your precious metals on government-owned property or anyone's property besides your own. You won't have any rights to it in the event someone finds it.
