How to Improve the Accuracy of Reading a Pulse by Hand
The ability to read a pulse by hand requires practice and the correct method. This process is generally used in the process of checking other vital signs. Using the wrong fingers, or trying to find a pulse in a random area, will result in an inaccurate reading. Reading a pulse by hand can be achieved only if the proper method is implemented.

Decide whether to check for a wrist pulse or a neck pulse. The wrist and the neck are the two commonly used areas to check for an accurate pulse reading. These two locations have an artery that passes close to the skin, which allows for an accurate pulse reading. For the most accurate reading, use the left wrist or the left side of the neck. Use your left wrist, palm facing up.

Use your index, second and third finger of your right hand to feel the heartbeat. When taking a wrist pulse, place the three fingers on the wrist, just below the thumb. When taking a neck pulse, place the three fingers on the left side of your neck near your windpipe.

Feel your pulse. Use your three fingers and press down lightly to be able to feel your pulse. If you are not able to feel your pulse, move your fingers around until you are able to find it. Your pulse feels very different from other movements in your body because it is a consistent beating. It is very important to feel your pulse for at least a minute to understand how the heart beats.

Measure your pulse. Use a watch or stopwatch to keep track of seconds. Coordinate the perfect time to keep track of the seconds and the number of heartbeats. Count the number of heartbeats you feel for 10 seconds. Once you know the number of heartbeats for 10 seconds, multiply the number by six to find your heart rate per minute.
