How to Replace Aluminum Screens for House Windows

Eventually all window screens will require some type of repair or replacement. Screen replacement is such a relatively simple and inexpensive process, it is generally more cost effective to replace the entire screen rather than doing patchwork repairs. Everything you need is available at most hardware stores and can be done in an afternoon. It doesn't require a great deal of skill--the perfect do-it-yourself project.

Things You'll Need

• Rolling spline tool
• Screen
• Screen spline
• Utility knife or scissors
• Flat-head screwdriver
• Tape

Instructions

1. Remove the screen panel from the window and place it on a smooth flat work surface.

2. Using a flat-head screwdriver, gently begin lifting out the screen spline, which is the thin rubber cord holding the screen in place. Once you have a few inches lifted out, you can easily pull out the remainder.

3. Measure and cut your screen. When measuring, add 2 inches to both the height and width, as you'll need some excess screen when you begin replacing the spline.

4. Arrange the new screen over the frame, making sure you've lined up the corners to keep the screen weave straight.

5. Tape the screen to the frame, pulling it taut as you go.

6. Using the convex wheel of the screen roller tool, force the screen into the groove going all the way around the window. Do not loosen the screen from the taped edges.

7. Install the new screen spline. This time you'll be using the concave wheel on your screen roller tool. Apply a fair amount of pressure as you push the spline into the groove. Continue this all the way around the frame until the ends meet.

8. Remove the tape from the edges of the frame. Using the utility knife or appropriate scissors, trim off the excess screen.

Tips & Warnings

• If the new spline is not pushed completely into the groove, there is a possibility the screen could loosen.
