How to Make an Easy Origami Flower With Normal Paper
The word "origami" is derived from the Japanese word "oru," which means "to fold," and the word "kami," which means "paper." This ancient art is used to create a variety of objects, such as flowers. The lily flower shape uses repeats of four folding patterns, which gives the beginner origami artist the opportunity to master the same fold several times within the same flower. Although artists generally use origami paper, other types of lightweight paper are used as well. The lightness in the paper weight ensures the creases, as well as retains the folds.
Things You'll Need
- Lightweight paper square, 8 x 8 inch
- Pencil (optional for curling petals)

1
Position the paper square on your worktable. If you are working with a print, make sure the print is facing the table. The non-printed side will be facing you. Take the lower right corner and fold it toward the upper left corner. Crease the fold. You will have a triangle.
-
2
Rotate the triangle. The fold will be on your left side and the open triangle will be on your right side. Fold the lower point upward to the upper point, to form a mini triangle. Crease the folds. Your mini triangle will have two open flaps.

3
Take the top flap's point and slightly open it by inserting your finger to shape it. Fold it toward the lower right point. It will begin to form a square.
-
4
Flip your paper over. Take the remaining flap and open it as in Step 3. Insert your finger to shape it and fold it to meet the lower point. You will have a completed square. Rotate the square to a diamond shape. Make sure the open flaps are facing up and the folds are facing toward you.
-
5
Fold the diamond's right side point toward the center fold line. Fold the left side point toward the center fold line. It will form a half kite on one side.
-
6
Flip your paper over and repeat Step 5. You will have a kite-like shape on both sides. Each side will have two half triangles with a visible center opening, for a total of four flaps.
-
7
Open one of the half triangles by gently inserting your finger. As you open the triangle, crease the sides. The half triangle will appear like a half diamond with a visible center fold line. Repeat this with the remaining three flaps. Your diamond will have a pocket-like half diamond on the lower half. You will be folding the upper half in the following step.
-
8
Fold the upper half's right side point toward the center. Crease the fold. Fold the upper half's left side point toward the center. Crease the fold. Open the folds. You will have visible crease lines. Gently pull the pocket-like bottom half toward you and pinch the creased fold lines inward. It will form a mini triangle shape. Repeat this with the remaining three pockets.
-
9
Open the side flaps to the area where you do not have a mini triangle. Fold the right side's bottom half toward the center. Crease the fold. Fold the left side's bottom half toward the center. Crease the fold. The lily's flower base will begin to form. Repeat with the remaining flat diamond flaps. The flower's base will be formed and you will have four upper points, which will be the lily's petals.
-
10
Pull each upper point toward you to form the petal. Rotate the base to the next point and pull the next point to form the next petal. Repeat with the remaining two petals.
-
11
Take your pencil and curl the tip of a petal to form the lily petal shape, if desired. Repeat with the other petals. Slightly open the flower to shape your completed origami flower.
