Instructions for a Spiral Heart Balloon

The heart is a very powerful symbol. When rendered as balloon art, it becomes an impressive set piece for weddings, engagements, Valentine parties or even Mother's Day events. "The addition of a spiral design makes the sculpture truly impressive," states Leo Bary, internationally recognized balloon artist of Balloons To You of Carrollton, Texas. "The twisting pattern wraps throughout the heart to symbolize the infinite power of love." Only a few steps and a little practice are required to create your own spiral heart. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inflate two latex balloons of the same color, using the electric inflator or a hand pump. Tie them together at the neck, or tie them separately and fasten them together with a paperclip.

    • 2

Repeat Step 1 with two balloons of the second color. Make certain all balloons are inflated to the same size. Take the two sets of two and twist them together at the neck so that you have four balloons fastened together with the two balloons of color A opposite each other and the two balloons of color B are opposite each other. Place the set of four balloons onto the heart frame near the base of the heart. Twist two balloons around each other to hold them in place.

    • 3

Repeat steps 1 and 2. Place the second set of four onto the heart frame. Push them tightly into the first set of four so that the second set is slightly offset from the first, nestling into the indentations between the balloons in the first set.

The spiral pattern is created by nestling balloons so that balloons of the same color are offset with each additional set.

Repeat Step 1, 2, and 3 so that the third set of balloons are pressed tightly into the second set and the colors are offset in the same direction. You should see the twisted design starting to appear. Continue inflating balloons, tying them together and placing them on the frame until the frame is completely covered. Be careful to maintain the offset pattern with every set of balloons to keep the twist design. The last few balloons may have to be inflated somewhat smaller to fit onto the frame between the existing balloons.

Place the finished heart on a base or suspend it from the ceiling for a stunning set piece.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you get comfortable with spiraling two colors, try doing it with four.

  • If the doubles are too difficult to tie, try tying the balloons directly onto the frame.

  • The design may also be done with 5-inch and 11-inch balloons, though the 11-inch balloons require at least an 8-foot frame.
