How Do I Change a Corona Kerosene Wick?

How Do I Change a Corona Kerosene Wick? thumbnail
Replace a Corona kerosene wick.

The use of kerosene for heat and lighting sources predates the 20th century, and was used as an alternative to coal during times when coal was scarce, according to Endtimesreport.com. Many people today prefer using kerosene heaters and lanterns as an alternative to electric heaters and lamps due to their reliability during power outages. Kerosene heaters and lamps do require periodic maintenance, and this process usually involves changing the wick once it's worn down. The wick is the most essential part of the kerosene heating system--other than the kerosene fuel, of course--and must be in good working order for the heater or lamp to operate at an optimal performance level.

Instructions

    • 1

Burn the remaining fuel in the heater if the tank is not already dry. You can empty the tank if you prefer, which is recommended so you can clean it after installing the new wick.

    • 2

Remove the heater or lamp cabinet from the base. This will be held in place by a few screws along the base. Screw placement will vary, however, depending on your specific Corona model. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws.

    • 3

Locate the ignition unit at the heater or lamp base. Some Corona models may have a metal plate securing the wick to the base. This is normally removed by unscrewing two to four wingnuts on either side of the plate. Remove the plate if applicable, then slide the wick out of the teeth, by turning the wick height knob. Be careful of the serrated teeth around the wick.

    • 4

Pull the wick out of the wick sleeve, then replace with the new wick. Fold the wick over once, then insert it through the sleeve. Turn the wick height knob to adjust it to the appropriate height for your particular model.

    • 5

Reassemble the wick-covering plate, if applicable, then put the cabinet back onto the base and reinstall the screws securely. Refill the kerosene tank and allow the wick about 1/2 hour to thoroughly soak in the fuel before lighting.
