How to Repair Rust on a Fender Well
Fender wells, also known as wheel wells, are prone to serious rust stains. The Second Chance Garage website explains that often, insufficient drain holes allow water to settle in the wells, leading to rust. If the rust is left untreated, it continues to spread and creates rust holes. At that point, replacing the body panels is the only option. But if you remove rust stains as they appear, you can avoid problems.

Use a long-handled scrubbing brush. Scrub vigorously to get rid of the rust stains in the well areas. You can find wheel well scrubbing brushes in the automotive sections of home improvement centers.

Apply oil and let it penetrate the rust stains to soften them. You can apply mineral oil using a scrubbing pad or spray on a small amount of WD-40. Once the oil has penetrated the rust stain, use a scrubbing brush, then finish by wiping the fender well clean and drying it completely. Hardware stores sell mineral oil and WD-40.

Apply naval jelly, which has phosphoric acid that removes rust stains. Use rubber gloves and paper towels to apply the jelly. Wait five to 10 minutes, then use the scrubbing brush. Wipe the area dry. You can buy naval jelly online or at a hardware store.
