How to Connect the HP DeskJet F4140 Scanner to a PC
The HP Deskjet F4140 features a flatbed scanner, meaning the cover of the device can be lifted up to reveal a single pane of glass used for scanning a document. In order to use the scanner, or any other function of the F4140, with a PC you will first need to install the printer's software and drivers onto the PC. If you have the installation CD that was originally sold with the Deskjet F4140, you can use it to install the software and drivers. If not, you can install the software and drivers using HP's website.

Plug in the F4140's power cord, making sure the plug is securely attached to the adapter as well as the back of the printer. Turn on the F4140 and the computer you wish to connect the printer to. Do not connect the USB cable between the printer and computer at this time.

Install the F4140's software and drivers onto the PC. If you have the installation disc, put it into the PC's optical drive and follow the on-screen instructions. If you do not have the disc, open the PC's web browser and go to www.hp.com. On the top of the HP home page, click on "Support and Drivers" and select the radio button labeled "Download Drivers and Software."
Enter "Deskjet F4140" in the blank box and press "Enter." On the next page, choose the operating system your PC is using. Click on the "HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers" link, which will open a download dialog box. Select where on the computer's hard drive you want to save the installation program. After the download process is over, find the installation software and double-click on it, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Restart your computer after you are done following all of the installation software's instructions, which will vary based on the operating system your computer is using. When your operating system starts up again, plug the USB cord into your computer and the F4140. The scanner on the Deskjet F4140 is now ready to be used.
