How to Make Your Own Punk Shirt
Rebellious youths started the Punk Movement in London during the 1970s. Punks used fashion as a means to shock traditional society and set themselves apart. Common punk fashion items included combat boots, ripped jeans, studded jackets and personalized T-shirts. Punks customized shirts to convey political beliefs and music group preferences. Punk T-shirts remain popular today, both in the DIY movement and Japanese youth culture. You can make your own punk T-shirt by converting an old shirt into your own personal expression of style. Does this Spark an idea?

Make a stencil based on a photograph of a person or a printout of a band logo. Place the acetate over the image. Trace shapes to cut out with a permanent marker, leaving at least 50 percent of the area of the stencil intact. Cut out all the marked areas with a razor blade.

4
Place the stencil on the shirt in a spot where it will be highly visible. Apply spray paint. Remove the stencil and use it again on another part of the shirt, if desired.
-
5
Use safety pins to hold ripped areas together. If you cut off parts of the shirt, reattach them with safety pins.
