Instructions

    • 1

Fill a deep fryer or heavy pot with oil. If you are using a deep fryer, set the temperature to 375 degrees F. If using a pot on the stove, turn the heat to medium-high.

    • 2

Sift the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, ¼ tsp. of the cinnamon and a sprinkle of nutmeg all together into a large bowl.

    • 3

Add the melted butter and mix it all up with your hands or a wooden spoon until the mixture is crumbly.

    • 4

Pour in the milk and beaten egg, and knead it all together until it forms a dough.

    • 5

Sprinkle flour on your work surface. Take the dough out of the bowl and set it onto the flour.

    • 6

Roll out the dough with a rolling pin, or just pat and smooth it with your hands until you have a sheet of dough that is about ¼ inch thick.

    • 7

Use the larger glass or biscuit cutter to cut out your donuts. Use the smaller glass or biscuit cutter to cut out the holes.

    • 8

Slide the raw donuts into the hot oil with the slotted spoon, and fry them until they are light brown. Turn them over and fry until they are golden. They cook really quickly, so only do a few at a time, and don't take your eyes off of them.

    • 9

Scoop the donuts out with the slotted spoon as soon as they are done, and let them drain on paper towels.

    • 10

Pour some sugar and a few healthy shakes of cinnamon into a brown paper lunch bag. Add the hot donuts, and shake them gently to coat them with the cinnamon and sugar mix.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a glaze of confectioner's sugar and milk to spoon over the donuts for an extra-sweet treat.

  • Never walk away from hot oil.
