How to Set Windows Folder Options

You can customize the way you view files and folders on your computer. For example, you might want to hide your system files so they cannot be accidentally altered or deleted. These instructions are for Windows 98.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Windows
  1. Step 1

    Open My Computer or Windows Explorer.

  2. Step 2

    Click Folder Options from the View menu.

  3. Step 3

    Select the General tab.

  4. Step 4

    Click one of the first two options to use Microsoft-defined settings.

  5. Step 5

    Or, to select custom settings, click the last option, and then click the Settings button.

  6. Step 6

    Make your decisions, and then click OK.

  7. Step 7

    Click the View tab.

  8. Step 8

    Click the Like Current Folder button to make all folders take on the settings you've chosen.

  9. Step 9

    In the list of options, choose what you want to appear in your folder windows.

  10. Step 10

    Click OK.

Tips & Warnings
  • Displaying the full path name of the file or folder will make it easier for you to locate files that you want.
  • If you do copy or move a lot of files between windows, use the custom settings on the General tab to have folders open in their own windows.
  • If you change from double-click to single-click settings, you may need to "relearn" your mousing skills.

on 8/5/2008 I run Windows XP Professional SP3.
Every time I restart my PC, the Windows Explorer Folder Options have reset to the default.
How can I make the options I choose "permanent"?

on 5/17/2008 I have carefull followed the instructions for changing Folder Options but am unable to find "Folder Options" from the view option in either My Computer or Windows Explorer.

I am running XP Home Edition and at 75 years of age need all the help available to me,
