How to Stop Computer-Generated Telemarketing

Stop computer-generated marketing in its tracks.

Computer-generated marketing is the new trend in telemarketing. Previously, when you received an annoying marketing call at dinnertime, you could ask the person on the other end to remove you from the marketer's call list and the calls would stop. Unfortunately, you cannot take the same action with a computerized or pre-recorded marketing call. The federal government has recently stepped in and provided a plan for stopping automated calls.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait on the line to see if you are provided with an option to be removed from the marketer's automated calling list. Typically, near the end of the message you will be given the option to "press '7' to be removed from the call list."

    • 2

Sign up for the National "Do-Not-Call" Registry. You can register by calling the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at: 1-888-382-1222 or by submitting a request on their website. You should stop receiving all automated marketing calls within 31 days of registering with the FTC.

    • 3

File a complaint with the FTC if you continue receiving unwanted or unsolicited calls from computerized marketing services 31 days or more after registering with the Do-Not-Call Registry. To file a complaint, go to the FTC's website and fill out a complaint form. You will be asked to provide your phone number, the date and time of the unwanted call, and whether the call was made by a computerized service. Complete your answers and submit your request.
