How to Create a Site Map in Dreamweaver

A site map in Dreamweaver provides you with an internal architecture of your website because it shows you a visual hierarchy of all of your Web pages and how they link together. If you are using Dreamweaver CS3 or an earlier version, this is an especially useful tool because it allows you to keep track of your site as you build it, present this image to a client and/or conveniently check for broken links. Using the tools in your Dreamweaver application, create your own site map.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your Adobe Dreamweaver application and select the "Files" option under the "Window" drop-down menu. Click on the website project in the dialog window that appears to make sure that you create a site map for the correct site.

    • 2

Control-click (Mac) or right-click (Windows) on your "index" or other home page file. Select the "Set as Home Page" option from the drop-down menu.

    • 3

Select "Map View" from the "Files" dialog window that you launched in Step 1. The window below now displays a site map of all of your Web pages and how they relate to one another. Double click the plus sign next to a file name to see all of the pages that the document currently links to.

    • 4

Click the "Manage Sites" option under the "Site" menu to change the default view of your site map (if preferred). Highlight your website project in the "Manage Sites" dialog box and click the "Edit" button. Click the "Advanced" tab at the top and then select the "Site Map Layout" title on the left. Use the text fields, radio buttons and check boxes to specify your preferences such as the number of columns displayed.

    • 5

Click the options button, which displays three dots and three lines, on the left of the "Files" window to save your site map as an image. Navigate from "File" to "Save Site Map" on the drop-down menu that appears, name your file, save it as a "PNG" or "BMP" and click the "Save" button. This image may now be printed out and/or inserted on a Web page.

Tips & Warnings

  • Red text in your site map view (Step 3) indicates that there is a broken link.
