How to Set Your Surf Pro Metal Detector

How to Set Your Surf Pro Metal Detector thumbnail
The Surf PI Pro lets you detect metal on the beach.

White's Surf PI Pro metal detector is designed to work well in conditions that negatively affect the performance of other detectors, such as in saltwater or on black sand. It is waterproof to 100 feet, so you can detect metal on the beach or in the surf without any concerns about damaging your cherished metal detector. As with any metal detector, your success depends partly on your skill and diligence in adjusting the settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the beach or other area where you plan to do your metal detecting.

    • 2

Turn your White's Surf PI Pro metal detector on by turning the "Gain" control knob away from the "Off" position.

    • 3

Place the coins or other metal objects on the ground in the area you will be searching.

    • 4

Wave the metal detector back and forth over the items on the ground and the surrounding area, keeping the coil about an inch from the ground, then adjust the "Gain" control knob until you find a sensitivity level that works for the area. If you hear a lot of false signals, you may be in an area with high mineralization; in that case, lower the sensitivity. Increase the sensitivity if you don't receive signals from your metal objects, or if these signals are very faint.

    • 5

Adjust the "Tuner" knob until the threshold noise is clearly audible yet fairly quiet. This will slightly affect the sensitivity of the metal detector, so you may wish to wave the metal detector over the objects again and fine-tune the position of the "Gain" control.

Tips & Warnings

  • Both the "Tuner" and "Gain" controls have a small triangle with a P inside pointing to a specific position. These positions are suggested for most metal detecting. If you don't have the time or inclination to fine-tune the controls, simply set them both to the position suggested by the triangles.
