How to Install a Second Hard Drive in a IBM T40 thumbnail
A second hard drive can be added to the T40.

The IBM T40 uses a swappable drive option called an Ultrabay Slim. This slot on the laptop can be used to install a second battery, an optical drive (such as a DVD-ROM drive) or a second hard drive. In order to install a second hard drive, however, you need a hard drive disk adapter for the Ultrabay Slim.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the second hard drive into the adapter. The connectors on the adapter match up to the ones on the back of the hard drive. The drive can only be inserted in one direction.

    • 2

Close the laptop and, with the latch facing you, push the latch towards the back of the laptop on the right side. A latch will pop out.

    • 3

Pull the latch away from the laptop to release the current Ultrabay Slim drive. Pull the drive away from the laptop to remove it.

    • 4

Push the latch back into the laptop, then insert the hard drive/adapter assembly into the drive bay. The connectors on the adapter need to point toward the laptop as you insert it. Push the drive firmly into place to secure it.
